“Take Me to O. King”
Name: Olivia King
Director, Deliverance Mass Choir
Interviewed by Torian Hill
I recently had the chance to interview the Director of Deliverance Mass Choir (DMC), Olivia King. For several years, King has served as section leader in the choir and over the last year has been directing alongside with Carl Cunningham (Master of Divinity, first year). Since King is no stranger to the choir, the relationship she has with her members is one that most do not have. Whether people are not ready to worship before a performance or if they are ready to “go to war,” as King calls it, she always finds a way to encourage and get people ready to minister. King is committed to the Deliverance Mass Choir both throughout the week and during weekends when the choir usually meets for practice or a performance. Ms. King is the true definition of both a leader, family member and Christian. Deliverance Mass Choir appreciates everything that she does for them and the effort she puts in to make DMC a family experience.
How long have you been involved in Deliverance Mass Choir (DMC)?
I have been involved with DMC for eight years, since my freshman year. I got involved because I love to sing and ever since Deliverance Mass Choir came to do ministry at my home church in Canada, I knew I had to be a part of it.
How big of a factor has DMC been in your spiritual journey?
DMC has been a major impact in my spiritual life. Being a part of this ministry has given me the opportunity to find God for myself and put me on a journey with him being first daily. I don't think I would be where I am spiritually without DMC.
Why did you decide to take the position of director when the previous one left?
Because I knew that the choir needed a director and I didn't want us to go through another year of not singing. After convening with God, I felt that it was the path that he wanted for me.
Has having different directors helped your directing style?
It has definitely helped! Because of the relationship I had with the past two directors, I have been able to implement both styles which has advanced the worship experience of the choir as a whole.
When you think of Deliverance Mass Choir what comes to mind?
I think of family. We fight at times but when it buckles down to it, I know without a doubt I would go to war with them any day.
What is your greatest memory with DMC?
When I was a freshman we had a “battle of the sections” and it was so much fun. We bonded as sections and as a choir and I will never forget that.
Can we expect anything exciting from DMC in these last few weeks of school?
Most definitely! DMC will be ministering at the music conference this Friday with Nolan Williams in attendance, and then we will be ministering on (April) 29 at PMC for the Koinonia Day on campus. We are excited and know that God is going to do amazing things in these last few weeks.
