Senior Spotlight: Amairis DeSilva

Senior Spotlight: Amairis DeSilva

Name: Amairis DeSilva
Class Standing: Senior
Major: Art Education
Interviewed by David Dunham

What got you interested in art education?
I’ve wanted to be an artist since before I could remember, so it seemed natural to get an education in art. You wouldn’t ask someone why they breathe, but art is like air to me.

What mediums do you work with/prefer?
My preferred medium is watercolor, but I tend to use prismacolor markers and colored pencils most of the time because they are less time-consuming.

What did Andrews help you accomplish?
Andrews gave me the opportunity to use mediums I was unfamiliar with, such as oil paints, clay and wood. The professors have also been very helpful in the development of my style as an artist.

What are your plans once you graduate?
I plan to create children’s books for multicultural homes. Being from a mixed-race home I noticed there were never books with people that looked like me so I want to change that for future generations.

DeSilva’s piece, entitled “Unarmed,” displays the contrast between a grey outlook on life, and the beauty that can be seen all around us.
