Enactus Food Truck on the Move

Enactus Food Truck on the Move

Name: Avery Audet

Class Standing: Junior

Major: Business Administration and Finance

Interviewed by Torian Hill

What is the Enactus group?

Enactus is an international organization that connects student, academic and business leaders through entrepreneurial-based projects that empower people to transform opportunities into real, sustainable progress for themselves and their communities. Guided by academic advisors and business experts, the student leaders of Enactus create and implement entrepreneurial projects around the globe. The experience not only transforms lives, it helps students develop the kind of talent and perspective that are essential to leadership in an ever-more complicated and challenging world.

What has inspired you to get involved with Enactus?

I was inspired to get involved with Enactus when I was told about it by William Down (junior, marketing), and I saw how much potential there was to make a lasting impact. And when I saw how Enactus was performing last year, I knew I wanted to join and make it better.

What exactly is the food truck?

The food truck is a mobile food market started by the Department of Agriculture, who we partnered with, that focuses on sustainable food options in food deserts (as defined by the USDA) around Berrien County. We sell healthy vegetarian sandwich wraps to businesses in more affluent communities in order to make enough money to sustain the truck while we sell Andrews-grown produce for a very low cost to people without access to fresh produce.

What role do you play?

Currently, I am one of the Enactus project leaders for the Mobile Farm Market project. I am involved in evaluating the financials of the food truck, determining where costs can be brought down, which businesses to sign contracts with, and how to better market the truck to the communities with advertising and social media. (Note: for more about the Mobile Farm Market, see the interview with Garth Woodruff in Humans).

Are there any other Enactus projects you are working on?

I'm very excited for the regional competition, which is coming up at the end of Spring Break. During the competition, we present all of our Enactus projects as a team to a panel of judges. We've all been busy working on and memorizing our scripts.

When you leave Andrews is it the end for you and your involvement with Enactus?

When I graduate, I hope to leave a better, stronger and more dedicated Enactus team than previous years. I'm aiming to help build our reputation up enough to inspire more Andrews students who want to get involved, especially those outside of the School of Business Administration because we need all kinds of experience in order to properly cover projects. I would very much like to donate money specifically dedicated to the AU Enactus team in the future when I hopefully have some money to play with—some funds to cover uniforms, some money to use towards starting projects and some money towards getting the team its own spacious conference room or office so we don't have to use existing rooms that might be occupied.
