Andrews Wishes Marvin & Sylvia Budd a Happy Retirement
On Thursday, Nov. 26, Marvin and Sylvia Budd’s retirement reception was held in Randall Lounge in Buller Hall. Many Andrews University faculty and staff joined this reception in celebrating Marvin and Sylvia Budd’s dedicated years of service to our campus, including Andrews University’s President Andrea Luxton.
Marvin Budd served as a Database Administrator for Andrews University Information Technology Services (ITS). Having graduated from Andrews University in 1972, Marvin worked at Andrews University on two separate occasions, most recently since 2014.
Marvin said that he was working at Andrews University when it got its first computer on campus, the IBM 1401, one completely different and dramatically larger than the ones we use today.
As the Database Administrator, Marvin tabulated data such as student registration information, financial data, academic records and alumni events. Marvin also said that in tabulating data prior to the installation of computers on campus, one would need to type in a card word-by-word; if the typist entered anything wrong, he or she would have to throw the card away and restart with a new card.
Lorena Bidwell, Chief Information Officer for Andrews University, said, “Marvin has been a big contribution to our campus. He is a very intelligent person, and he always gives suggestions for some new computer systems and how to improve the way things work.”
Sylvia Budd worked as an Internal Auditor in the President’s Office. Her responsibilities included conducting audits and investigations for various Andrews University departments, after which she would write reports and suggest various recommendations for improvement. Sylvia would also assist the departments in implementing her recommendations.
Sylvia was also instrumental in establishing and monitoring the confidential complaint mechanism, heralded in the February 11, 2015 issue of the Andrews Agenda. The newsletter states, “In an effort to continue to follow best practices at Andrews University, confidential complaint mechanism is available for faculty, staff and students to share concerns, independent of management, about questionable accounting, accounting controls, auditing matters or financial ethical misconduct.”
Barbara Read, Registration Specialist at the Office of Academic Records, said, “Sylvia is very nice and friendly; she always cares and concerns for others.”
Read said that though she and Sylvia seldom worked together, their offices were very near and she could tell Sylvia is a very gentle and thoughtful person.
The Student Movement wishes Marvin and Sylvia Budd a happy retirement, and thanks them for their commitment and contributions to making Andrews University a better institution of higher education over their many years of service.
