Alumni Game Sets Pace for Season

Alumni Game Sets Pace for Season

Last weekend marked Andrews’s Alumni Homecoming weekend. Saturday evening was the long-awaited alumni basketball game. Both male and female games were exciting and all teams represented Andrews very well. Fans say that the highlight of the night was the men’s game. In the beginning, the alumni team beat this year’s 2017-18 Cardinals by 15 points during the first quarter. The current Cardinals used that as fuel and turned the game around, resulting in the alumni team falling short to our cardinals. Here are a few words with both the captain of the men and women’s teams on their feedback of the game and expectations for the season.

Brianna Kettelson (junior, documentary film)

How do you feel going into this season as the captain?
I feel ready and excited to start this season. We have a great group of girls this year who are ready to work and play hard. I think we have a very solid team going into this year and we’re building chemistry together.  I hope to have a great season.

How confident do you feel going into the season after Saturday night’s game?
Saturday night really showed us that we play well together. We have speed and we have size. We still have a lot to work on, but I think it can be a great season if we continue to work hard and get better.

Now that you have experience as a team with one game and a win under your belt, what will you guys do to change things?
I think we’ll continue to work on and get better at our man-to-man defense so we can make it tough for other teams to score. We’ll work on slowing down our offense, taking the best possible scoring opportunities and not settling for just any shot, but instead take the best shooting and scoring opportunities.

Josiah Charles (junior, exercise science)

How did you feel after the game knowing you secured the win?
We were elated. It was fun to watch and the way we’ve played has prepared us for what to expect this season.

Do you think your performance shows how you will play this season?
Our performance Saturday night was just the baseline of what we are capable of; everyone is bought in and we’ll keep on grinding.

Have your expectations changed for the season based on Saturday's game?
After Saturday night, we know what we need to improve on and now we’ll work harder to  make the best of this season.

How do you feel your performance was?
I feel like I did pretty well, I started off cold but then got into my groove as time went on. It was great to play in front of the fans in the lively atmosphere.

What techniques did you use to lead the team on Saturday?
We used the advice that previous captains gave us and set the example and as a result we got the results we hoped for. It was an amazing feeling for Justin and me to lead these group of talented guys to win.
