Thursday, October 19th marked the second football game of the ladies’ intramurals season for the Lady Young Gunz. The Lady Young Gunz faced the Humble Fumblers in a hard-fought match where the former scored first.
Tori Kim added more points to the team’s total with an interception and runback for a touchdown.
She said, “It was an amazing experience as it was my second of the season and first of the game.” Before this season, Kim had never had an interception in her intramural football career. Her performance over the last two games has certainly placed her in the spotlight and made her a potential threat to other teams. Shortly after this drive, the Lady Young Gunz made the Humble Fumblers, another all women’s team, force a turnover with another interception from Victoria Delote (second year, masters in medical laboratory science). This led them to an unsuccessful red zone play.
After this, the half ended with the Humble Fumblers still scoreless. In their opening drive of the second half, the Lady Young Gunz scored another touchdown. While this score at the start of the half was the last of the game, Young Gunz were able to increase their lead with two conversions in the second half. This resulted in a final score of 27-0.
To be fair, the Humble Fumblers is a new women’s team this season. Compared to the Lady Young Gunz, the Humble Fumblers have to use the same team on both offense and defense. To further complicate things, they lost their quarterback (QB) early in the game. These factors aside, the Humble Fumblers nevertheless gave a good fight.
Delote said, “It feels nice to get a win early on in the season. They might've lost their QB, but they put up a really good effort without (her), which made our win that much more fun.”
As mentioned before, both teams fought hard throughout the game; their palpable hunger for a win created a loud and exciting atmosphere that only enhanced the competitive environment. The amount of support for the players was phenomenal. This drove and encouraged both teams to strive for the win. In addition, The Lady Young Gunz benefitted from the full support of their counterpart men’s team. When the pick-six occurred in the first half, the adrenaline was pumping for the player on the spotlight and for the fans who were watching. You could see how nervous they were and how desperate they were for their team to win.
In conclusion, a special congratulations goes to the Lady Young Guns, for winning
their first game of the season which brings them up to an even record and to the men’s team
for being a supporting team. Also, congrats to the Humble Fumblers for a competitive
game where quitting was not an option.
In response to their loss, Alyssa Royster (Senior, Spanish, Pre-dentistry) said, “Honestly, we’re ready to go to the NFL… end quote.”
