Whisk Review: Melendez Restaurant Brings Flavor to the Table

Whisk Review: Melendez Restaurant Brings Flavor to the Table

Located across the street from Andrews’ campus, Melendez Imports, International Food Market and Restaurant provides delicious, tasteful and satisfying food in a homey atmosphere. Melendez, which specializes in Mexican and West Indian food, is a local eatery with an atypical menu. On top of this, its location is very convenient for Andrews’ students. What more could one want?

Food: Providing tastes similar to a Caribbean meal, Melendez has food that is definitely worth trying out. Featuring spices, a soft texture and a delicate smell made the meal all the more appealing. I love Mexican food, and Melendez has some wonderful options, including Spanish rice, empanadas and tacos. It’s a go-to spot for when you want to try a new flavor and don’t want to spend money on gas.

Atmosphere & Service: At Melendez, one is bound to feel welcome! Coming in, there is a special atmosphere, one that greeted me at the door. A TV was set up in the corner of the store to allow me to sit and watch while I waited for my food. I was very comfortable, and because there was a TV to keep me busy my food felt like it was done in no time. The service complimented the atmosphere. The cashier and servers all handled my food with care, and everything was very clean. The way they they treated my food with care made me excited. If they were proud of it, then who am I not to enjoy? I wish they would have had more vegetarian options though.

Price: The price of food at Melendez goes hand in hand with the amount of food one gets. I believe the only sizes they have are medium and large, but in getting the medium I received so much food it felt as though I had a large. At around $9 - $13 per entree, the prices were a bit expensive, but it’s worth the money when one sees how much food he or she really gets, especially when ordering rice!

Overall: Give it a try. Melendez may not be the place for everyone, but it does deserve a shot to change your mind. The food, atmosphere, service, and price are the basis for Melendez being a nice restaurant. Delicious, tasteful, and satisfying and the homey feeling it brings paints the picture that is Melendez.
