AU Bikeshare Rolling Back into Business

AU Bikeshare Rolling Back into Business

AU Bikeshare is a term that should be completely unfamiliar to anyone who was not an Andrews University student during the 2015 spring semester. For those of you without the privilege of remembering AU Bikeshare, it was a glorious program where any student could sign a simple sheet of paper and roll away on sick new pair of wheels for an hour or two. The only catch—you couldn’t take the bikes down flights of stairs or completely rip tire from rim and expect to return the bike without any sort of repercussion. Ridiculous, right? How could anyone expect to live up to these lofty expectations? It was in this area that most people failed, and thus, so did AU Bikeshare. If you ventured down into one of the spare rooms at the Recreation Center anytime last year, you would have noticed a sad little heap of broken and bruised AU Cruisers tossed in a damp, dark corner. And yet, there is still hope.

In some random act of God’s grace, AU Bikeshare will live to see another semester. According to Andrews University Student Association (AUSA) President Ashley Neu, AU Bikeshare was discontinued shortly after it was first started simply because many of the bikes were beaten, abused and in serious need of repair. This year, the program will no longer be run under AUSA Senate and AUSA Student Services. Instead, the program will be overseen by Associate Dean Teela Ruehle of University Towers. While we still don’t know all the information surrounding the subject, such as when the program will officially be announced as “up and running,” this shouldn’t stop anyone from thinking of all the possible benefits of AU Bikeshare. As long as these benefits don’t involve any of the previous actions that caused the discontinuation of the original AU Bikeshare program, you should be good.

Just in case you’re one of the people who’s sitting back, wondering what Bikeshare could possibly be useful for, I’ve composed a short list of reasons why you need the program. Are you running late for class? Just stop by one of the three desks that offers the sign-out sheet for AU Bikeshare (In Lamson Hall, Meier Hall and the Division of Student Life) and be on your way. Need a ride to Apple Valley but all your friends are missing in action? No problem, because AU Bikeshare is to the rescue. Perhaps you want to take a romantic ride with that special someone you’ve had your eye on for the past four or more years? AU Bikeshare’s got you, Seminarian. Whatever your reason, you’ll find a use for the new and improved AU Bikeshare.
